Do you write lists in your free time (like shopping lists or any other one)?

Sure. But maybe not as many as you think.  Shopping lists and to-do lists.  I think up other, more interesting lists (best album of all time, etc.) in my head, but they don’t get written down much.

“In other words, an alternate title to the book could have been Everything Happens at Once.”

What is so special/interesting writing about young people in the age of fifteen/sixteen?

Well, I haven’t been that age for over thirty years, so a lot of writing about people that age is trying (desperately) to remember what that was like.  I have children around that age, but even living with people like that can’t tell you what it’s like to be that person.  And that’s what I’m always after when I’m writing fiction.  I want to get the inside of their head on the page.  So, I think my main rule for writing about that age was something like: an insightful and/or sensitive 15-16 year old understands and feels everything an adult feels, but in a much blunter, more immediate, and less clear way.

"That’s the struggle, to realize that in the end it’s just you and you alone who has to deal with all this."

What would you say is the most struggling thing Darren has to face in the story?

Ultimately, I think it’s the simultaneity of everything.  In other words, an alternate title to the book could have been Everything Happens at Once.  If just his dad was coming out, okay, that’s a challenge.  If just his brother was having his own crisis and deeply disappointing Darren, okay, bummer.  If he was just obsessed with a strange girl that would be one thing.  Same with his mom and the phase she’s going through. But it’s everyone at the same time.  And what this means is that there is no one who is safe and reliable for Darren.  He’s on his own.  That’s the struggle, to realize that in the end it’s just you and you alone who has to deal with all this.

Do you attribute Darren’s experience to you own life?

Not really.  This book isn’t autobiographical in any meaningful way.  The only thing that in some vague way comes out of my life is the belief (which comes from experience) that all the people close to you will disappoint or surprise you (in bad ways) sooner or later.  But all the details in this novel are made up.

Where did you get the idea of writing a whole book in lists?

I hadn’t been writing for a little while before I started on this project, and I was getting anxious about that.  I just couldn’t think up anything that felt promising.  Then, one night in bed, some of the details of this story started coming to me.  I could have just gotten up to go write, but I’m lazy and like sleeping, so I simply tried to remember them, which I did, in list form, in my head.  The next day, I sat down to write down these lists, before I forgot them.  I didn’t think this would be the final form of whatever I was writing.  But I found immediately that I really enjoyed writing these lists. They were coming out in a voice I found interesting.  So, when I got to the end of the lists I already had in my head, I just kept going.

"I wanted the reader to feel that all the main characters were truly doing the best they could under the circumstances, even Nate."

What is your favorite thing about Darren?

I like that he’s a decent person.  And that he’s a vegetarian, though I am not.

Was magst du am liebsten an Darren?

Is there someone in the book you could identify with?

I tried to identity with all the main characters.  I tried not to sell out any of them.  Not sure you’ll know what I mean by “sell out.”  It means to dismiss them, or treat them poorly and somehow expose them as the people the reader isn’t supposed to like.  I wanted the reader to feel that all the main characters were truly doing the best they could under the circumstances, even Nate.  To do that, I had to occupy them whenever I was writing their parts.  Of course, Darren is at the center of everything, and the lists are sort of in his voice (but only sort of—I don’t think he’s aware of these lists as lists), so I identified with him most.

If there where young writers sitting on their first book, what would be your advice for them?

Just write.  Don’t stop writing.  Thinking about writing, agonizing over writing, wondering if you should write—none of this is writing, and none of it will do you much good.  And know that it will likely take longer and be harder than you’d like it to be. So try to enjoy the process.  That’s all you have, the process of writing.

Was wäre dein Tipp an junge Autoren, die gerade an ihrem ersten Buch sitzen?

“Schreibt einfach.

If you would made a journey like Darren. Would you get to the same end like him or would you act different in some point?

I’m not sure I’d have the nerve to do what he does at the end.  The rest, I think I had him do what I’d do.

"I like cooking. I listen to a lot of music. I like being with my family."

Coffee or tea?

Tea.  I’m a big tea drinker.

Er ist ein großer Tee trinker.

Romantic or rational?

More rational.  Trying to be, if not romantic exactly, then more emotional.

Going to the cinema or sitting in front of the TV?

I like going to the movies. I like watching sports on TV.

Audiobook or book?

Book.  Though a very good audiobook can be wonderful.

Winter or summer?

Summer.  Definitely summer.  I’d love winter if it lasted 4-6 weeks.

Sommer, definitiv.

Netflix or a book?

Probably a book.  I try not to watch too many TV shows on Netflix, because then that’s all you wind up doing.

"I thought for a while about writing more about these characters, to see what really happens between Darren and Zoey, but I’ll leave that to the readers."

If you are not writing what would be the first thing you want to do/or do?

I like exercising (basketball, biking), because I’m getting older and my body feels bad if I’m not active. I like cooking. I listen to a lot of music. I like being with my family.

Can we expect another Darren story or is it finished?  Because there a lot of unanswered questions.

This is probably it.  I realize that the narrative ends without a lot of closure, but that’s okay with me.  By the time I’m done with a book, I’m ready to not spend any more time with the characters.  I’m ready to move on.  I thought for a while about writing more about these characters, to see what really happens between Darren and Zoey, but I’ll leave that to the readers.

Which one is your biggest dream?

I’m not sure what this question is asking.  What is my biggest dream?  If so, I’d say something boring and obvious like: the people closest to me remaining healthy for a long, long time.  Everything else will take care of itself.

Was ist dein größer Traum?

Thanks for your interest in my writing.  It means a lot to me.

Danke für dein Interesse an meinem Geschriebenen. Das bedeutet mir eine Menge.

Best,

Todd
